Vancouver × Taipei Cross-Border Relationship: Who Moves First? | VEENI

Kevin had been in Vancouver for six years when VEENI introduced him to Claire, who was based in Taipei. On paper, the match made obvious sense. In practice, the first question after their second video call was: "So... who moves?"

This question — deceptively simple — is actually the wrong question.

Why "who moves first?" is the wrong frame

The problem with asking "who moves first?" in the early stages of a relationship is that it turns a future logistical question into an immediate emotional test. Both parties end up performing commitment rather than building it.

The better question — and the one we encourage our cross-border members to sit with — is: "What does a future together actually look like for two people who both have good lives where they are?"

"Once we stopped asking who moves, and started talking about what we actually wanted our lives to look like in five years, everything became clearer. The logistics followed the vision, not the other way around."

Why Vancouver–Taipei works

Of all the cross-border connections in the VEENI network, Vancouver–Taipei is among the most natural. The cultural connection is strong on both sides. Vancouver's Chinese community means that a Taipei-based partner moving there would land in a familiar cultural landscape. And the increasing prevalence of remote work means that the initial period of "figuring it out" is more feasible than it used to be.

Many of our Vancouver–Taipei matches have found creative solutions: trial periods, alternating bases, or leveraging remote work to spend extended time in both cities before making permanent decisions. None of these approaches require "who moves first?" to be answered immediately.

VEENI's role in cross-border introductions doesn't end with the introduction. We support members through the practical questions that follow — including the "who moves?" conversation, when the time is right to have it.

Kevin and Claire

Three months after their introduction, Claire came to Vancouver for two months, working remotely. Kevin visited Taipei for a month. By the end of that period, the "who moves?" question had been replaced by a different one: "When do we start looking for a place in Vancouver?"

They're now based in Taipei, by mutual choice, after Kevin's company opened an Asia office.
